Description

Key Characters: Leaf base rounded, truncate, or shallowly cordate; lamina 8-26 mm wide, generally widest in middle of lamina, sepals 2–6 mm long; stipules linear to lanceolate, margins dentate to erose

Growth Form: Rhizomatous herb.

Stems: Rhizome creeping, vertical stems produced from rhizome, internodes on vertical stem longer than on rhizome.

Roots:

Leaves: alternate lamina 8-26 mm wide, generally widest in middle of lamina rounded, truncate, or shallowly cordate petiolate rhizome stipules 1.5–3.0 mm long, 1–2 mm wide, often overlapping and scaly in appearance; stipules on vertical stems stipules 2.0–5.0 mm long, 1.0–2.5 mm wide. stipules present, linear to lanceolate, margins dentate to erose.

Flowers: Flowers solitary on terminal peduncle, subtended by opposite pair of small linear bracts on peduncles. Sepals 2–6 mm long; elliptic in chasmogamous flowers and linear and enclosing all other floral organs in cleistogamous flowers. Petals elliptic and clawed in chasmogamous flowers. Flowers 5 or fewer, up to 3 mm long, 1 mm wide, white, with withered appearance in cleistogamous flowers. staminal filaments coherent around ovary; anther connective of lower stamens prolonged into an appendage. Ovary 3-carpellate, 1-celled, ovules numerous per placenta.

Fruit: Fruit a loculicidal capsule; capsule valves 7–9 mm long. elastically dehiscent by rigid keels and thin valve walls. Seeds numerous; ovoid to globose; testa somewhat leathery; dull; usually with a terminal elaiosome; apex rounded; with fleshy oily endosperm.
